Home Living : March 8th 2011
4 HLC - HOME LIVING: CENTRAL, Tuesday, March 8, 2011 A happy mix of old and new » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING Renovating an old house has its own rewards, but successfully blending the old with the new can be a risky business. Embark on any renovation and you'll be presented with endless questions and decisions. Add the fact that your house is particularly old into the mix and it's a safe bet that you'll need more than a lick of paint to get the job done. So how do you get it right? There are a few things to bear in mind: The practicalities: First up, remember that -- unlike building from scratch or renovating a house that's only, say, 10 years old -- when you're dealing with an older home there's likely to be more going on behind the scenes. Start pulling down the existing fabric and you might be faced with a number of pricey surprises, like faulty wiring or damp, which you haven't budgeted for. Also remember that, if you plan to start pulling down walls yourself, you need to be aware of asbestos, which was commonly used between the 1940s and 1980s. If your house was built during that period, seek professional help to remove any asbestos-based materials. Lastly, while council approval may be necessary for any type of renovation, if your house is particularly old, it pays to check if it's heritage-listed. The look: It's time to consider the look of your house and like most renovations, this comes down to personal preference. But if it is an old home, there are a few more things to take into consideration. Depending on the building's age, you may wish to plan a renovation that remains as true to the building's original features and character as possible -- and many architects will advise you that this is the best option. Others will be happy to rip as much of the original house down as possible, replacing it with a contemporary extension that has little to do with how the house began. A good compromise -- and one that often produces the most aesthetically pleasing result -- is to aim for somewhere in between. While it's definitely important to be sympathetic to a building's heritage and original features, don't be fooled into thinking you have to install a ''traditional'' kitchen or bathroom if something contemporary is what you really have your heart set on. Probably the biggest tip is to choose an architect or designer who can deliver what you're after. Ask questions, look at examples of their work, and choose one with whom you feel comfortable. • 2 x Mirror doors • Wall to wall up to 2.4m wide • 1 x Single Hanging space • 1 x Draw unit (4 draws) + 3 shelving •1xShoerack • 1 x Double hanging space • 3 x mirror doors •Walltowallupto 3.6m wide Bankstown 9786 0395e Surcharge applies to Campbelltown area Wally's Wardrobe World 2173633i hlc wk49 up to 2.4m wide up to 3.6m wide 2.4m high 2.4m high $570 inc GST $870 inc GST cumberlandnewspapers.com.au 2189101 Inspiration, innovative products and practical solutions Each week Home Living provides you with the latest in renovation, interior decorating and design Introduce your business to over 1.8 million* prospective customers. phone 9689 5395 *Roy Morgan Readership Survey, September 2006 +PZWSH` 2P[JOLUZ >HU[LK VM UVYTHS WYPJLZ 2P[JOLULYZ 2P[JOLUZ has an impressive range of brand new NLWFKHQ ÀQLVKHV DQG GHVLJQV :H QHHG clients with homes in your area to "show WKHP RIIμ :H OO QHHG WR WDNH SKRWRV RI your new kitchen for our brochure when LW V LQVWDOOHG ,W V FKHDSHU WKDQ EXLOGLQJ D VHW DQG LW ORRNV EHWWHU LQ D UHDO KRPH :H PD\ DOVR QHHG \RXU WHVWLPRQLDO ZKHQ FRPSOHWHG ¸;Y\Z[ 2P[JOLULYZ MVY (\Z[YHSPH»Z ILZ[ J\Z[VT THKL RP[JOLUZ¹ /\L` /<99@ :;90*;3@ 3040;,+ 6--,9 05;,9,:; -9,, -05(5*, (=(03()3, 73<: Kitcheners Kitchens made just for youTM ® -VY RP[JOLUZ ^P[O JHIPUL[Y` ]HS\LK V]LY L_ NSHZZ ZWSHZOIHJRZ Z[VUL ILUJO[VWZ [YHKL ^VYRZ +LWVZP[ YLX\PYLK *HU»[ IL \ZLK PU JVUQ\UJ[PVU ^P[O HU` V[OLY VMMLY (WWYV]LK HWWSPJHU[Z ZLSLJ[LK WYVK\J[Z VUS` -LLZ JOHYNLZ JVUKP[PVUZ HWWS` *HSS UV^ OYZ MVY H MYLL KLZPNU HUK X\V[L VY ]PZP[ ^^^ RP[JOLULYZ JVT H\ 7SLHZL Z\WWS` TVYL PUMV 7SLHZL ZLUK L IVVR )VVR MYLL KLZPNU X\V[L 5HTL 7OVUL ,THPS :\I\YI -YLL 7VZ[! 2P[JOLULYZ 2P[JOLUZ 76 )V_ (SL_HUKYPH 5:> HL70 1582-1584 Canterbury Road Punchbowl Tel 9708 6888 | 9708 6688 www.goodkitchenbathroom.com.au GOOD KITCHEN & BATHROOM Mon-Fri9am-5pm|Sat-Sun9.30am-4pm massive discounts on kitchens and bathrooms 2058877i 8/03 L shape kitchen including 10 cabinets with polyurethane doors and granite benchtop CUSTOM DESIGN SERVICE AVAILABLE from $1850 Whole sale hotline: 0422123760 firstname.lastname@example.org from $350 plus free base bar from $185 from $130 from $250 from $380 from $150 from $65 from $170 Free quote and design! 2153055i 8/3 ROLLER SHUTTERS MANUFACTURER DIRECT QUALITY PRODUCTS AT TRADE PRICES • Domestic Rollers Shutters • Shopfront Roller Shutters • Pergola Roller Shutters • Heavy Duty Extruded Shutters • 10 Year Written Warranty • Fast Professional Installation by Qualified Tradesman • Reduce Heating & Cooling Bills • Deter Burglars • Reduce Noise • Storm Protection FREE MEASURE & QUOTE WE SERVICE MOST BRANDS OF SHUTTERS Lic No 196633C 2/52 Alfred Rd, Chipping Norton (opp Mack Trucks) CALL TODAY 1300 302 822 www.maverickrollerproducts.com.au
