5 sessions Brand Color Management New brand color management standards are available that change the way we communicate color. Utilizing these new tools will allow digital data to reside inside a PDF. This data is spectral accommodating the simplest system to the most complex. Using physical swatches printed over black with a minimum of substrate, brand color and black and the color over black provides a swatch for creation software that designers can utilize defining the actual brand color. This xml data also provides information for the ink manufacturers, proofing systems as well as the printer in a blind transfer format. Steve Smiley, Vertis Inc. Why High Resolution Flexo? Imaging flexographic plates at higher resolutions opens the door to a world of new possibilities that are changing the face of the industry. This presentation will describe high resolution imaging and how it enables the use of new screening technologies that can transfer more ink, print with more detail, and smoothly fade to zero in the highlights. To further illustrate the benefits, case studies of companies currently using hi-res flexo will be examined. Sustainability, the pursuit of continuous improvement and a realization of a reduction in the plant’s environmental footprint, is now an expected behavior for every printer/converter. In fact, it’s no longer acceptable to simply comply with applicable legal requirements and make vague claims regarding your environmental stewardship. Instead, it is expected that every member of the packaging supply chain is tracking and reporting on sustainability-related metrics; while at the same time, publicly declaring their goals for improving and executing new initiatives to achieve them. How do printers/converters make meaningful improvements to their operations? How will these improvements achieve their three-fold goal: improved economic performance, minimized environmental impact, and societal improvements? This session will provide insight into assessing operational practices, evaluating emerging technologies and re-thinking how packaging is produced. Closing the Loop: Understanding Various End-of-Life Options for packaging Materials The life-cycle of a product includes the end-of-life disposition of waste materials. In many cases, those materials are the printed articles of packaging that were used to contain, protect, preserve and promote the product. In this session, I will show that: 1) there is a documented benefit from recycling, 2) not as much is being recycled as we think, 3) recycling requires a systematic approach, 4) recycling is not the only means of landfill diversion, and 5) customer and consumer education is an imperative. Paul Kearns, Exopack Improving Walmart Sustainable packaging Scorecard Results by Changing plate processing Method: A Case Study The Walmart Sustainable Packaging Scorecard has become a hot topic among Consumer Product Companies (CPCs) as they strive to demonstrate their compliance to sustainability standards set by the world’s largest retailer. Many in the flexo community are aware of the Packaging Scorecard’s existence, but may be unaware of a section of the Scorecard that can be influenced by innovative technologies. This presentation will be a case study of how a consumer product company’s score can be positively impacted by printing plate processing. This presentation will take attendees through Section Four of the Walmart Sustainable Packaging Scorecard, the LCA that was used to document the positive impact of plate processing, and how a CPC can use that data on the Scorecard. Heather Barrett, MacDermid Printing Solutions Finding Sustainable Solutions to Your Recycling Challenges As packaging companies are pursuing waste disposal reduction goals and possibly Zero-Landfill status, recycling options for secondary packaging materials from flexographic printers are often cost prohibitive, labor intensive, or seemingly unavailable. This presentation will provide examples of solutions for recycling troublesome waste streams, and how they can bring economic value along with “greening” your operations. Joseph Meindl, American Recycling & Manufacturing Complying with the New FTC Green Guides On October 6, 2010 the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued proposed revisions to their Green Guides which define what the FTC requires when making environmental marketing claims. As packaging companies and our customers seek to promote sustainability related accomplishments and product characteristics, care must be taken to ensure the marketing claims and statements do not run afoul of the FTC’s guidelines. The FTC has taken several significant enforcement actions against brand owners for what they determined to be false or misleading claims. Does your customer expect you to be the subject matter expert on marketing your new sustainable package? There are a few things you should know.
