6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, March 22, 2011 Perfect summer swimming pool starts now » ADVERTISING FEATURE As we come into the cooler months, now is the time to start preparing your pool for autumn and winter. Not only will this help protect your investment in the long run, but it will also ensure pool water is ready for swimming as soon as the warmer weather hits. While it may be tempting to switch off equipment for a few months to save electricity and chemical costs, the reality is you run the risk of not only seriously damaging filtration and sanitation systems, but also your pool's interior. Turning off the filter during the colder months means when the swimming season returns, you'll have a big job on your hands to restore your pool's status, explains Swimming Pool & Spa Association of NSW Limited's chief executive officer Spiros Dassakis. By following a few simple procedures, you can ''winterise'' your pool and it will be ready to dive into the first hot day of the season. Autumn Clean your pool more regularly to remove leaves and other debris; use a pool cover Reduce filtration hours to2-3hours a day or, in salt pools, reduce the chlorine output as the days get cooler; use a winter treatment kit Winter Thoroughly backwash the filter and/ or clean the cartridge with a recognised filter cleaner and degreaser Ensure that the skimmer basket, and hair and lint pot, are free of debris Lubricate all O-rings with a silicone- based lubricant Adjust the pH to 7.2 to 7.6 by adding acid if the level is too high or soda ash if it's too low Mix 500g of granular chlorine or 750ml of liquid chlorine and add to the pool Mix 750ml to 1L of a long-life algaecide that is specifically designed for winter and add it to the pool Adjust the timer to allow the filter to operate for two to three hours each day, ideally in off-peak period Once your pool has been winterised: Cover the pool completely Check the chlorine and pH levels every two weeks; empty the skimmer basket when full Check the water level is halfway up the skimmer box opening Check the pressure gauge on the filter is not indicating backwash Turn the pool lights on for at least 30 minutes a week to prevent build-up of moisture within the light and wiring Extend your swimming season Just because the air temperature might be cooling down, it doesn't mean you should just stop enjoying your pool. There is a range of effective, energy- efficient heating solutions designed to extend your swimming season. SOLAR Fuelled by the power of the sun, solar heating systems are low-cost. GAS Fastest method of heating your pool, providing a comfortable temperature for swimming on demand. HEAT PUMP Heat pumps may not heat up the pool as fast as gas, but they are more energy-efficient. They operate like a refrigerator in reverse and their heat energy source is extracted from the ambient air.
