4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, March 29, 2011 Don't mess with mould » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING Any house with a mouldy or musty smell, with dark stains on its walls or ceilings shows signs of mould present and poses a health hazard. Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Australian Institute of Architects, warns mould should not be taken lightly. Archicentre's ACT and NSW manager Ian Agnew said mould was a common factor found by its inspectors in older homes and units, and apartments with poor ventilation. Mr Agnew said mould in homes was an issue homeowners should monitor carefully and all prospective home- buyers check thoroughly. ''Mould grows wherever it can find food and water. As food sources are abundant in buildings, mould growth generally indicates the presence of excess moisture, which may be due to numerous factors, including leaking water pipes, flooding and condensation." Moulds release toxins which may result in adverse health effects, including allergies, asthma and other respiratory disorders, eye, nose and throat irritation and skin problems. ''Moulds are living organisms and reproduce by releasing spores into the atmosphere, similar to mushrooms and other fungi,'' Mr Agnew said. ''Rising damp may be evident in winter, but is not always detectable in summer. Even minor signs of damp may indicate a far more serious underlying problem and you should consult a damp control company.'' Mr Agnew said it was important to trace the source of the damp which could come from leaking water pipes. He said mould could be eradicated by cleaning it with a special purpose household cleaner -- which should kill the present infestation, fixing any sources of moisture such as condensation, rising damp, leaking roofs and pipes, and by improving ventilation by leaving windows open. ''To cure rising damp, your damp control company or building inspector will advise the most appropriate solution.'' archicentre.com.au 7)$% 2!.'% /& "%$2//- $).).' 2//- ,)6).' 2//- &52.)452% 6 Coates Place, Wetherill Park 9609 7533 or 9609 7933 Check the latest designs on www.goldenwoodfurniture.com.au Visit our Factory Open 7 Days (off Newton Road) Goldenwood Furniture 2234845i 15/3 Australian Timbers Custom Made Factory direct at wholesale prices ALL AREAS 9838 9090 FREE MEASURE & QUOTE Lifetime Warranty www.justforyouwardrobes.com.au DESIGNED TO SUIT YOUR BUDGET Timber Coloured panel Painted Mirrored Sliding Hinged Built-inWardrobe SPECIALISTS JUST FOR YOU WARDROBES PTY.
