HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, April 5, 2011 7 Decorating eggs simple and fun » ADVERTISING FEATURE Eggcellent: Kids will love learning to dye eggs at Easter. Many families carry on the Easter tradition of decorating eggs. However, before you decorate eggs, you need to get the inside of the egg out, which can be a complicating and messy task, especially since you have to do this without breaking the shell. Here's how you can blow the egg out without creating a mess. Use a needle to poke a small hole in the smaller or narrow end of the egg. Then use the needle to poke a slightly larger hole in the other end of the egg. Move the pin in and out and around to ensure you break the membrane around the yolk. Hold the egg over the bowl and blow through the small hole. The egg should start coming out of the larger hole and fall into the bowl. Once you are finished, rinse the egg well with water. Your eggs are now ready to decorate. While many people prefer to go out and buy decorated ones, you can simply do this fun-filled project at home, using things from your pantry. No doubt it's easier to buy dyes from the shop but if you're a little creative, you can easily make these at home and save money and the environment. It's possible to come up with many colours using natural ingredients. Like fresh beets or cranberries, frozen raspberries make excellent red dyes; orange or lemon peels, carrot tops, celery seed or ground cumin for yellows; spinach leaves for green, strong brewed coffee, instant coffee, black walnut shells (boiled), black tea, for brown or beige; violet blossoms, Hibiscus tea, small quantity of red onions skins (boiled), red wine for violet or purple; To dye the perfect Easter eggs the natural way, here's what to do: Put eggs in a single layer in a pan. Pour water in pan until the eggs are covered. Add about a teaspoon of vinegar. Add the natural dye appropriate to the colour you want your eggs to be. (The more eggs you are dyeing at a time, the more dye you will need to use.) Bring water to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove the substance you used to colour the eggs. Put eggs in a bowl. If you want your eggs to be a darker shade, cover them with the dye and let them stand overnight in the refrigerator. Add the finishing touches you like to these coloured eggs -- wrappers, foils, ribbons, jewel and fabric scraps.
