Home Living : April 5th 2011
4 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, April 5, 2011 Give decks a new lease of life » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING The Easter long weekend is the perfect time to spruce up your home. Take time off to paint or give that outdoor decking a new lease of life. Here are few things to get started. Painting exterior surfaces The general rule of thumb when paint- ing is that you cover about 7sq m of ordinary surface or about 5sq m of bare wood or plaster/hour. Brick Surface: Painting a brick surface can be achieved usually by two coats of water-based acrylic finish, without a sealer required. If the bricks are a brown to purple vanadium, check the brick- work is dry and patch the affected area with an oil-based sealer, before re- painting the bricks. Concrete tiling: Concrete tiles may start to erode after 15-20 years, making the colour dull. In this case, the surface should be treated with a simple bleach solution, water and scrubbing to re- move moss and mould, before re- painting. Finally, apply two coats of exterior water-based acrylic top coat. Fibreglass/cement sheeting: Before painting, scrub sheeting with a steel wool pad and a mild solution of deter- gent in water, rinse off and allow to dry. An exterior water-based acrylic paint can be used on corrugated fibreglass (used on pergolas) and shade houses. Timber care inside and out A timber finish will give your outdoor decking a natural gloss, making it an inviting space for entertaining guests. Choose a top quality finish that will give you better coverage and a longer lasting solution. Pre-treatment: To ensure paint dura- bility, apply wood preservative to a dry and grease-free surface, allowing four hours to dry. Applying a clear finish: A high-gloss, clear finish will protect the timber and highlight the natural grain. New timber will require one coat of an exterior clear finish and previously varnished timber will need two coats.
