Home Living : April 19th 2011
4 HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, April 19, 2011 Well-kept garden a great investment » ADVERTISING FEATURE Australians who invest in a well kept garden can expect it to increase their property sale price by 12 per cent or $65,000, according to the Husqvarna Global Garden Report 2011. Australians seem to know it too, with 63 per cent sharing that they consider their garden an investment. The Husqvarna Global Garden Report 2011, focused largely on the return on investment of a home garden. A survey of 5000 homeowners from nine different countries, as well as a global panel of 44 real estate agents and 120 garden designers was conducted, to quantify the impact of a beautiful garden on property prices. The report said that when it came to the return (payback-if-sold) on a well maintained garden, Australian homeowners would receive an average 3.6 times more than the amount invested in it, if sold. This ranked fourth worldwide, following home owners in Japan who will get 5.1 times their investment, France with 5 times the investment, and homeowners in the UK who will receive an estimated 4.1 return when sold. Investment in a garden is measured through time and money spent on maintenance, makeovers, plants and garden accessories. When asked to cite the top reasons of why maintaining a garden is important, Australians and Americans were the most investment savvy of the nations, revealing that their efforts in the garden are first and foremost to increase the sale appeal of their property. In Australia, this was voted above relaxation, privacy from neighbours, outlet for gardening interest and to be close to nature. Husqvarna Australia general manager- product marketing Stephen Clark said the front garden was the first thing potential buyers saw on approaching a home, and the backyard was always eagerly inspected for space and usability. ''Just like inside renovations, the more effort and time put into improving these areas, the more return a home owner will receive when it comes time to sell, he said. ''The great Aussie backyard has always been home to the great Aussie barbecue and Australians are increasingly aware that it is also home to a hidden fortune, if used and presented correctly.'' The top five garden elements that Australian home owners believe contribute most to the value of a property are: a well maintained lawn; inviting social area; designed stone paths; decorative trees and, decorative bushes. The Global Garden Report The Husqvarna Global Garden Report (GGR) is an annual research report commissioned by Husqvarna to identify and compare key global gardening trends. The research is independently conducted by Kairos Future, an international research and consulting company. A survey was conducted of 5000 homeowners across France, Japan, Poland, Sweden, Australia, Germany, UK, Russia and the US. Expert comments from a global panel of 44 real estate agents and 120 garden designers were incorporated. Homeowners were split in two groups, one who received an image of a house with a beautiful garden; the second group received an image of the same house with a plain- looking garden.
