FLEXO Magazine : April 2011
Industry Indicators vironmental management system (EMS), such as ISO 14001, an SMS has the same basic structure, but goes beyond the E in EMS and incorporates the three pillars of sustainability: people, planet and profit. Thirty-four percent of the printers re- ported having an SMS in place, as shown in Figure 3. (Editor’s Note: For additional information on SMSes, see the March 2009 issue of FLEXO.) Printers are not working alone to become more sustain- able. The vast majority of the respondents, nearly 90 percent, reported working with their suppliers to find ways to reduce their environmental footprint. And, nearly 90 percent said they were implementing waste reduction or recycling programs. Going one step further, a number of members have calcu- lated their carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), as shown in Figure 4. These calculations can be highly variable depending on the method being used and Figure 4. Percentage of respondents that have calculated their carbon footprint and greenhouse emissions. Figure 5.
