Technologies & Techniques provide brilliant and saturated color. Chroma distinguishes how closely a col- or is to a neutral gray, shown toward the center of the color wheel. The further out the selected color is from the middle, the more chromatic or saturated that color is. It is important to remember that mono-pigmented inks yield a higher chroma. A mono-pigment ink consists of purely one pigment, where a blended ink consists of more than one pigment. A blended pigment is likely to decrease chroma and flatness. The ink bases chosen for this project were, therefore, primarily chosen based off of the desired hue angles and chroma possible. Other considerations weighed heavily were availability, fit for use in packaging and market-use. The final ink bases selected, in order, were Red 2, Or- ange 5, Orange 34, Orange 64, Green 7 and Violet 23. Their spectral reflectance curves are shown in Figures 2a-f. Once these pigments were chosen based on the discussed characteristics, they were broken into four separate ink set combinations. Each ink set com- bines the four standard process colors: cyan, yellow, magenta, and black with the additional colors depending on the product mix. The ink set combinations developed as shown in Table 2. First, notice each ink set combina- tion uses an ultraviolet inking system mentioned in this report. A limitation of this experiment was to include only pig- ments using an ultraviolet ink vehicle. Second, remember that the cyan, yellow, magenta and black pigments will remain consistent throughout each ink set combination because the CMYK process is already standardized. Next, note that the green and violet pigments in each ink set will also remain consistent. During the initial stage of consulting with ink manufacturers it was found that Green 7 and Violet 23 were the most commonly used pigments in these hue regions. The ability to obtain other ink bases within these hue regions was impossible because of their lack of use within the industry and their innate properties. Therefore, Green 7 and Violet 23 were the only plausible and relevant ink bases that matched actual market use. A further explanation of alternative pigments in these regions is illustrated in Table 3. Consequently, each ink set combination has a varying red or orange ink base with the same green and violet ink base as discussed. The last notable point is that the ink sets can be developed according to a product mix. A product mix can be de- fined as the total sum of product items offered by an organization. Typically, a product mix has a corresponding mar- keting plan and brand colors to create brand equity for that company.
