Technologies & Techniques vides dozens of varying color patches that represent a uniform sampling of the LAB color space. The target is equipped with a data file containing the XYZ values for each patch. For this research, the most recent version in the series of standard CMYK characterization targets was chosen, IT8/7-4 . FIRST supports using the industry standard IT8/7-4 characterization target. According to FIRST, this data set is the result of collaborative efforts of several standard committees and represents the best technical approach to a standard target. The target can be formatted in a variety of ways to be read by various color measurement devices. FIRST recommends printing the target in a format that can be read by the color measurement device being used. The random-layout target should be chosen for proofing and print character- ization. The randomized locations of the various CMYK combinations allows for the ink takeout across the target area to be more uniform. Errors introduced by a proofing device or press anomalies will be randomized with respect to the CIELAB color space. For these reasons, the random-layout of the IT8/7-4 was chosen for this research. The prepress file is shown in Figure 4. The traditional CMYK IT8/7-4 target was run along with each additional pig- ment: green, violet and red or orange. Each additional pigment was placed on its opposing complimentary colors angle to avoid moiré on press. These test targets were adjusted and printed according to the previous character- (Continued from page 52) www.flexography.org april 2011 FLeXO 137 Over 40 years of experience in the flexographic industry, design and production of the highest quality systems. innovation is the key to our success.
