Technologies & Techniques Figures 10-14 illustrate the color spaces for each of the variable ink set combinations created using Color Engine Pilot Software. The images show how the additional pigments expand the color gamut beyond the GRACoL specification. The lighter color outside of the saturated color in each dia- gram displays how many more colors are possible with that specified pigment and ink set combination. The inside, more saturated color is the GRACoL CMYK specification. CONCLUSION An expanded color gamut system offers the ability to print several jobs in one pressrun, print near-exact brand color matches, and save makeready time while enjoying cost savings. Implementing this system ensures that the diffi- cult challenge of color communication between designers, marketers and printers is satisfied. Adding red, blue, or- ange or violet pigments to the CMYK process adds depth and contrast to precisely manage spot colors and halftone images. The creation of standardized ink set combinations with tested ink bases can ensure a significant increase in the possible color gamut that will provide cost savings and produce near-exact brand color matches. n About the Author: Kristen Zeleznik is a student at Clemson University in Clemson, S.C .
