Home Living : April 26th 2011
8 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, April 26, 2011 It's always important to save water » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING Australians are encouraged to take a three-minute challenge to observe their action on water wastage in the shower. Rheem Australia said World Water Day on March 22 called on Australians to cut back on shower time to save water and money. A recent Rheem research showed that 48 per cent of Australians spent six or more minutes in the shower daily and about half waste water before they got under the shower. ''Many of us don't realise that on average we use a staggering nine litres of water per minute in the shower,'' says Rheem Australia group product man- ager John Wilkins. ''If the more than eight million Aust- ralians who admit to spending six plus minutes in the shower per day halved their showers, they would save about 221 million litres of water -- the equivalent of 88 Olympic-sized pools,'' Mr Wilkins said. ''Together we can make huge savings in water and, with water rates and the cost of living continuing to rise, it also means the hip pocket won't be hit as hard.'' The Rheem Water Star Shower Poll, conducted by Newspoll by telephone in February gave a representative sample of 1200 adults nationally. It highlighted significant water wastage shower statistics including: 26 per cent of Australians have two or more showers a day. Taking two or more showers a day -- NSW (29 per cent), QLD (37 per cent) and WA (36 per cent), compared to VIC (13 per cent) and SA (18 per cent); 68 per cent of Australians wait for water to heat up before standing under the shower; 54 per cent of Australians waste the shower water before getting in; 13 per cent of Australians take action to alleviate this water wastage, for example, buckets in shower to collect the water; grey water systems. ''It's heartening that some house- holders are taking action to save water, but it's obvious that more can be done,'' Mr Wilkins said. ''The Newspoll findings reinforce that water wastage remains an overwhelm- ing community problem,'' he said. Details: rheem.com.au 2186179i 19/4 Turn your dreams into reality.
