sation. Mentoring programs also foster
collaboration between colleagues, which
engenders the teamwork typical of an effec-
While mentoring offers many benefits, there
are limitations. It requires mentor training,
and the identification of suitable mentors,
since an experienced individual holding a
leadership position will not necessarily be a
good mentor. Training needs to be specific
in how to develop the mentee. It requires
the appropriate matching of mentees to
mentors, and also needs to be properly
resourced in terms of adequate time for the
regular interaction required for an effective
relationship to develop.
Despite such limitations, the studies by
Zey and by Sarros and Butchatsky indi-
cate that mentoring has a range of positive
benefits that make it worth the investment.
According to Loader, mentors are able to
answer the questions you're usually too
scared to ask, give advice on problems and
support you in times of need.
Mentors don't necessarily make mentees
into successful leaders, but they can provide
them with knowledge, skills and abilities,
support and opportunities, and affirmation
of their abilities that can lead them to the
road to the top. T
