Home Living : May 24th 2011
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, May 24, 2011 9 Winter comfort can be cutting edge » ADVERTISING FEATURE Winter's approach brings a desire to remain indoors, host cosy dinner parties and stay warm. Home decoration has to follow to suit the mood. Hosting the largest collection of homewares from across Australia, The August Home & Giving Fair will welcome Australia's leading retailers, stylists and buyers, all looking to explore these seasonal differences and discover trends for the home. Anne-Maree Sargeant, Editor-At-Large of Belle Magazine and trend forecaster for Gift and Homewares Australia (GHA), anticipates the central theme for winter home this year is comfort. ''Warmth and comfort will be favoured over sleek designs and minimalist- inspired interiors,'' she said. ''A comfortable space can be created by a few simple tweaks of your current environment, using fabrics, colours and lighting. ''Adding throws, pillows and carpets in tactile fabrics, and adding earthy, tonal colours are two simple ways to add warmth,'' Ms Sargeant said. Charcoal greys, soft pinks, warm browns and along with orange and shades of aubergine, are predicted to be the most popular. Ms Sargeant contests the idea that luxury and great design must be sacrificed in order to achieve comfort. ''You don't have to sacrifice cutting-edge design for something that's comfortable,'' she said. ''For winter 2011 we will see a blend of comfort, luxury and innovative design.'' For example, consider opting for fabrics that elicit luxury and opulence such as throws made from cashmere and pillowcases made from silk. GHA member and owner of Lelbys, Lesley Gordon designs and produces contemporary children's bean chairs and throw rugs that keep both comfort and design in mind. The rugs and chairs are made to match the colour palate of most living rooms and are made of cotton and faux fur. ''For me, creating children's decor is all about the marriage of comfort and design. Not only must a chair or throw look beautiful, it must be functional as well as luxurious; a unique piece of furniture that complements its environment,'' she said. While most Australian homes don't have the luxury of a fireplace, rustic colours will help create a similar sensation of cosiness and warmth. ''Tonal, muted and earthy colours help create a space that delivers warmth and comfort, safety and wellbeing.'' The Home & Giving August Fair for 2011 will take place August 6-10. Go to agha.com.au.
