Home Living : May 31st 2011
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, May 31, 2011 5 Heat is on winter bills » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING There are some simple steps to prepare your home for winter, ensuring warm air stays inside where its needed. Ausgrid's energy efficiency expert Paul Myors says it's important to make sure your home is thermally efficient before you switch your heater on. He said draughts and unwanted air leakages could suck away the warmth, increasing home heating costs by up to 25 per cent. Door snakes are cheap to buy and are a great solution to stop draughts. He suggests: Covering windows by closing curtains and blinds helps prevent heat escaping from your home. If you are building or renovating, consider installing double glazed windows and insulation as they both minimise heat loss. Ceiling insulation will make your home more comfortable and can reduce your heating costs by up to 30 per cent. Wall insulation is also effective and recommended for new homes. A simple alternative to underfloor insulation is to lay rugs on bare floors, which will help reduce heat loss. Mr Myors says one of the easiest and affordable ways to keep warm is to pull on a jumper, a pair of thick socks and slippers, and throw on a blanket. If you decide to turn the heater on, remember to only heat the room you're using and set the thermostat between 18C and 21C. Every degree above this adds about 10 per cent to your heating costs.
