Home Living : June 7th 2011
6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, June 7, 2011 Garden in winter to ensure plants spring into summer » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING Winter doesn't have to be the time to shun gardens: there are plenty of things happening. Carry on winter maintenance tasks to keep your garden healthy and in shape for the new season. Vegies to sow in June Good month to sow onions, especially the popular ''sweet red'' used in salads. Start onion seeds in boxes or pots and transplant when seedlings are good size. June pest watch Check indoor plants for pests like scale (waxycoated blobs) and mealybug (fluffy white bumps). Where possible, remove the worst-affected parts of the plant. Spray lightly with PestOil or Scale Gun. If problem persists, take the plant outside and spray with Confidor. Prune in June Prune out old, fruited raspberry canes and cut back grape vines. Leave side branches on vines but cut their length to the last two buds. Begin pruning deciduous shrubs (but not those that flower in spring). Think back to last year and remember which plants were badly affected by the winter cold. Move sensitive pot plants under cover. Keep a sheet of plastic nearby to throw over the stakes on extra cold nights. Details: yates.com.au World's Leading Shutters | Roller Blinds | Romans | Venetians | Awnings and more...
