HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, June 14, 2011 5 Keep the cool air out » ADVERTISING FEATUREHOMELIVING Winterproof your home by taking up some basic maintenance jobs. With some knowledge and the right tools, you can tackle some easy home improvement projects to make your house comfortable this winter. Here are some tips and tricks to a warm home: Go around the house and check your windows and doors. If you find any leaks, it's time to repair them. Hardware shops have many options to block such leaks, which will stop cold air coming in during winter. You can also stuff the area with some plastic or old towel. Trim trees and remove any dead twigs. The flashing around the chimney or vent pipes should be watertight. Close the fireplace damper when you aren't using it. Drain underground sprinklers, outdoor faucets and garden hoses. Put up sets of heavy curtains. These can block drafts on both windows and doors. Get up the ladder and check gutters. Remove leaves and debris from gutters and give it a good hose. When cleaning this, also check the condition of gutters. Make sure the down pipes are carrying water away from the house's foundation. Consider installing gutter guards to keep them clean. Check and clean drains. Check heating systems -- make sure it's even working, before the coldest weather descends. A strong, odd, short- lasting smell is natural when firing up the furnace. If the smell is strong, call a professional. Change the old filters regularly. Faulty heater could produce carbon monoxide. Poor maintenance of heaters can cause house fires. Don't forget the chimney -- don't put off your chimney needs before using your fireplace. Check and clean chimney. Buy a protective cap with a screen. Those with wood stoves should invest in a screen as well. Before starting any DIY projects, make sure you have the essential tools.
