HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, June 14, 2011 7 Colour in their personal space » ADVERTISING FEATURE HOMELIVING BEDROOM DESIGN TIPS: Give tired furniture pieces a facelift with a fresh coat of paint If you are stuck with a blank feature wall, add a few decals which are stylish, removable and repositionable, leaving no surface damage to your walls Adding an element of colour to a child's bedroom not only creates a fresh space but enhances their mental stimulation and inspires creativity and imagination. Using colour to create the decorative finishes of striping, stencilling or feature walls, easily transforms a child's plain white room, which can be effortlessly updated as the child grows and their taste changes. Dulux's leading colour forecaster Andrea Lucena-Orr said inspiration for colour choice is very simple. ''Using one, or a combination of accent colours found in the child's linen, toys or furniture adds dimension and a sense of cohesiveness to the room,'' she said. Ms Lucena-Orr says children should help with colour choices so they can fashion their own individual spaces and create a room they will love. ''Give kids three schemes to choose from. They are usually pretty quick to make their decision. There have been many instances where parents have had to repaint because the child was not consulted and didn't like the outcome.'' Popular colour trends for children's rooms include greens, blues and metallic silvers for boys; purples, pinks, lemon and soft metallic golds for girls; and darker bold shades for teens. Elsewhere in the house, bold hues of orange and yellow are set to be the season's biggest colour. ''The mood of the world undeniably influences our colour selections. The need for a renewed reassurance, harmony and tranquillity in an unstable economic climate are mirrored by the desire for freedom, revival and bold abandon,'' Ms Lucena-Orr said. ''The spectrum of yellow tones spans from bold, bright sunshine and canary yellows which spell optimism, renewed vitality and revival, to deep reassuring mustards and earthy oranges. ''Nostalgic creamier tones evoke comforting images of history and the past whilst light and lemony hues create a feeling of space and freedom from the confines of daily struggles.''
