HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, June 14, 2011 3 Don't waste energy cutting essentials » ADVERTISING FEATURE Australia's retailing and food service sectors should brace for tougher times, with research showing two out of three consumers are considering cutting discretionary spending to help cover the cost of skyrocketing power bills. An online poll carried out by Newspoll of more than 1200 adults aged 18 to 64, commissioned by Solahart, found 87 per cent of respondents were planning to cut down on eating out or ordering takeaways. Additionally, 79 per cent of consumers will put the brakes on buying household items such as furniture or electrical goods, 76 per cent will slash holiday spending and 73 per cent will go without new clothes. Solahart national manager Stephen Cranch, warns the looming introduction of a carbon tax would cause greater financial strain for Australian families. ''Households, particularly those with children, are feeling the pressure of increasing power prices and are looking for ways to cover the costs,'' Mr Cranch said. ''Our research has shown that four out of five consumers are worried power bills will rise even further if the carbon tax goes ahead, making cost-cutting even more of a priority.'' The Newspoll survey revealed 96 per cent felt rising power bills would add pressure to the household budget. Even essential items such as fuel and groceries aren't safe from the impact of mounting energy prices, with 45 per cent of respondents said they would consider cutting spending on transport and 38 per cent saying they would contemplate cutting back on groceries. ''The most effective way to cut your energy expenditure is to become more energy efficient,'' Mr Cranch said. One way this could be achieved is by replacing your electric water heater with a solar alternative. From 2012, the Federal Government plans to phase out electric water heaters which means households needing to replace an electric hot water system will be required to install an alternative such as a solar water heater or a heat pump. The federal government and some state governments are offering generous rebates to eligible home- owners who replace their electric water heater with a solar hot water system.
