FTA TODAY Performance Press Lean Interface, Open Architecture Capture FTA’s 2011 Technical Innovation Award for Mark Andy By Robert Moran Smart, simple and effective—that is what press opera- tors are saying about Mark Andy ’s Performance Series printing presses. At plants where machines are in posi- tion and up and running, reports indicate that waste is down, productivity is up and profits are on the rise. Furthermore, workflows are smooth and predictable and Lean manufactur- ing is becoming common practice. People are taking notice, talking about the technology and investigating its impact on in-plant performance. They are intrigued by its potential to stand as flexography ’s alternative to digital on short runs and intricate works, prompting the Flexographic Technical Association to bestow its 2011 Techni- cal Innovation Award on the Performance Series of in-line flexographic printing presses. Since Mark Andy introduced the series in September 2009, more than 70 machines have been sold, with six converters already making repeat purchases. By all accounts, print stations and print decks that have been redesigned from the ground up are helping to propel the future of in-line flexo technology. Mark Andy maintains that it analyzed every step and com- ponent in existing in-line technology and ignored all precon- ceived flexo workflow assumptions in devising the award- winning machinery. Series features include minimal frame design, short web paths, intuitive servo-drive technology, simplified plate cylinder and ink loading and locking systems and hands-free automatic impression-setting. Mary Sullivan, director global marketing, says, “The Per- formance Series by Mark Andy is a proven flexographic print technology that has redefined the entire on-press work flow. Performance Series technology drives extreme productivity, reduces waste and directly sup- ports green sus- tainability. This new flexo tech- nology features a whole new design consist- ing of integrated self-setting components, a swift-loading inking system, intuitive automa- tion and web management.” Elaborating on the specifics, she points to four critical com- ponents. • Load-and- lock inking system. 28 FLEXO June 2011 www.flexography.org Digital Alternative • Performance Series setup requires less than 20 sec- onds. Setups and changeovers produce only 20 feet of waste or less. • Integrated self-setting components include ink and impression systems as well as intuitive automation and web management. • Print deck design and sophisticated controls maxi- mize performance. • Reducing the web paths for UV printing also drasti- cally cuts the amount of material or substrate in the press, which means less waste bound for landfills.
