be blurry. PSG’s operation, focused on reducing waste and conserving energy and materials, became more cost-effective and efficient.” POLYCELLO – TECHNICAL INNOVATION PolyCello, a 55-year-old company that has been a member of FTA for 22 years, earned the FTA Environmental Excellence Award for Technical Innovation. PolyCello was the first ISO 14001 certified flexo printer in North America, and it recently earned certification by the Sustainable Green Printing Part- nership. PolyCello believes that preserving and protecting the envi- ronment is everyone’s responsibility. The company ’s philoso- phy, which is to remain constantly operating with the highest level of integrity, extends to its commitment to the environ- ment, and PolyCello strives to maintain a responsible balance between economic, environmental and social needs. PolyCello’s SmartPack technology is an innovative, environ- mentally-conscious packaging that gives the look of high- quality lamination with only one layer. It uses energy-curing technology and a process free of volatile organic compounds. SmartPack reduces production steps, saving labor costs and energy consumption. It also offers greater recycling: A flexible package that once had a recycle symbol of 7 is now rated 2, meaning millions of packages each year can be diverted from landfills to the recycling stream. SmartPack is fully inte- grated into PolyCello’s printing process and does not require any downstream production, as is the case with laminated products. “By working with the entire supply chain, PolyCello was able to generate a flexible package that met the end-user’s requirements, while making it easier to recycle,” says awards judge Michael Impastato, of Flint Group. “ The end-of-life issue for flexible packaging has been the proverbial chicken or the egg. Flexible packaging is not highly recycled because not many recyclers are available for this material. Recyclers do not operate in flexible packaging because the materials are dif- ficult to process and separate. With its approach, PolyCello has addressed the difficulties of separation. Now it’s the recyclers’ turn to step up and use this waste stream. ” Congratulations to these three companies—FTA is very proud to call them members! Family-owned since 1956, PolyCello is one of Canada’s largest print facilities and a leader in flexible packaging. The firm captured the Flexographic Technical Association’s prestigious Environmental Excellence Award for Technical Innovation this Spring. PolyCello views SGP Certification as validation of its environmental controls implementa- tion. The company plans to use the SGP Certification to align with environmentally conscious clients that value packaging sourced from a certified, sustainable facility. “Our team meets regularly to determine methodologies for dealing with waste products and to curb emissions. We continually assess every aspect of our operations to identify opportunities to further reduce our environmental footprint,” comments Frank Wilson, environmental health and safety (EH&S) coordinator. “S GP is in line with our business strategy and provides the benchmark for measuring sustainability. It is a logical step in our sustainability path.” PolyCello strives to maintain a responsible balance between economic, environmental and social needs. The company offers alternative packaging solutions including MicroPackTM Steam- able packaging, recyclable SmartPackTM packaging that replaces millions of landfill-bound laminated products, and a wide range of full-featured, multi-web stand up packages.
