HLC - HOME LIVING: CENTRAL, Tuesday, June 28, 2011 1 HOMELIVING ............................................ INSIDE IDEAL IDEAS Smart energy buys ENERGY WISE Save by light switching GREEN INTENTIONS Why consumers fail to buy SOLAR REBATES Make the most of them Janita Singh Smarter ways to go green We often speak about saving energy and going green. But many of us still don't know how to make smart choices, especially at home. The Energy Department points out that appliances can account for up to 30 per cent of your home energy use. Refrigerators, washers, dryers and dishwashers burn up energy and often make up the bulk of your bill. If you're replacing these, look at the energy efficiency and star rating. Many electrical appliances sold in Australia carry an approved Energy Rating Label to help consumers compare how much electricity or gas they use, while the star rating gives a quick assessment of the model's energy efficiency. The position of the appliance, how you operate it and how you maintain it all affect how much energy is used -- for example, placing your refrigerator next to your oven means it has to work harder to keep your food cold. Leaving appliances on standby is another key source of hidden energy costs, while heating or cooling can account for up to 40 per cent of household energy use.
