Home Living : June 28th 2011
4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, June 28, 2011 Save with the right lights Switch off when you leave the room The ban on incandescent light bulbs is under way and there are now energy-efficient alternatives to help you save up to $100 per year on energy bills. Ausgrid's energy efficiency expert, Paul Myors, said lighting wasn't the biggest energy user in the home but easy to make improvements on. Standard incandescent light bulbs were banned in February, 2010, but you might still have some in use at home. ''They're very inefficient so it's best to have a quick look around your home and replace them with newer globes that will save you up to $80 per year and reduce greenhouse emissions,'' Mr Myors said. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) shine just as bright as standard bulbs, last up to 10 times longer and use 80 per cent less energy. The lamps are available in a range of wattages and designs, and some are dimmable. Another option is the halogen energy saver bulb which is 30 per cent more efficient than the banned bulb and lasts twice as long. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are the newest development in lighting. They can be expensive but have a maximum life expectancy of up to 50,000 hours. That's about 50 years for the average household light, and LEDs can use up to 75 per cent less energy than the standard incandescent. It's a myth that switching lights off and on uses more energy than leaving them running. The simplest way to save on lighting is to switch them off in rooms that aren't being used. This will save up to $40 per year.
