Home Living : July 5th 2011
HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, July 5, 2011 1 Unsafe work sparks warning Take heed of warnings. NSW Fair Trading has issued a timely reminder on the need to use properly licensed electricians to avoid accidents and even deaths during winter. Every year Fair Trading reports on electrical accidents. The report for 2009-10 showed there were five fatalities from 51 serious accidents compared to four fatalities from 47 accidents in 2008-09. Fair Trading Deputy Commissioner Steve Griffin said half the non-fatal accidents involved working with overhead power lines and the majority of incidents involved people who were not electrical or network workers. ''Unsafe practices were identified as a factor in four of the five electrocutions in 2009-10 and the absence of safety switches was a contributing factor in three of the fatalities,'' Mr Griffin said. Things to consider: Do not undertake do-it-yourself electrical work. All work must be carried out by a licensed electrician; Do not work live. Safe work procedures are essential for electrical workers. Risk assessment, isolation, testing and use of safety equipment are all essential; Safety switches save lives. Since 1991, the installation of safety switches on power circuits has been mandatory in new homes and additions. Since 2000 they have been mandatory on both lighting and power circuits of new houses and additions. Safety switches must be tested regularly; Observe and obey electrical hazard warning notices and entry prohibited notices; 'Look up and live' when working near overhead lines. Electricity can spark across a gap, so don't take risks. Make sure you understand what each component entails; Decide what's appropriate: Think about how far you want to go. Would installing a water tank, putting awnings over windows and giving your insulation an upgrade do the trick? Or do you want to make your home as green as possible by opting for solar power and using sustainable building materials and appliances? Do your homework: In order to come to terms with how sustainable design works and what it will mean for your lifestyle, do your research by visiting showrooms and websites and reading magazines and newspapers specialising in them; Find a designer who is sympathetic: While it's becoming more mainstream, some designers are more experienced in sustainable design so if you're passionate about giving your project a green feel, find someone who specialises in this area. 3AMMUT 3TREET 3MITHFIELD WWW GLIDEROL COM &/2 ! &2%% -%!352% 15/4% #!,, o -ANUFACTURERS OF RESIDENTIAL ROLLERS DOORS o 3ECTIONAL OVERHEAD DOORS o !UTOMATIC GARAGE DOOR OPERATORS 2060084i 25/1 2152107i 18/1 9755 1622 4677 2301 Phone: APOLLO® PATIOS Patios Pergolas Carports Decks Screened & Glass Enclosures 4647 8850 www.apollopatio.com.au Construction by Apollo Additions 166046c * conditions apply * WWW.HALFPRICESHUTTERS.COM.AU REMOTE CONTROLLED ROLLER SHUTTERS CALL NOW 136121 *Available to approved customers only.
