4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, July 12, 2011 HOMELIVING Tips for a sustainable bathroom A single flush toilet can use up to 12 litres of water in one flush, whereas dual-flush toilets average less than four litres, which can save about 51 litres per person per day, or almost 80,000 litres a year for a family of four. Reece Bathroom marketing manager Belinda Geels provides her top tips for a sustainable bathroom. Update your hot water unit Hot water can account for more than 25 per cent of a household's energy usage, so it is important to install an energy-efficient unit. Take advantage of current government rebates. Install a thermostatic mixer A thermostatic mixer ensures you don't waste any unnecessary water waiting for your preferred temperature. Ensure fixtures and fittings are water efficient Look out for WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) rated products. The WELS scheme has two main features: a star-rating standard that gives a quick, comparative assessment of a product's water efficiency and a consumption figure that provides an estimate of likely water usage. Showerheads have a maximum three-star rating, toilets a maximum five-star rating and tapware a maximum six-star rating. A standard showerhead uses as much as 25 litres of water a minute, while a WELS three-star rated water-efficient showerhead uses as little as 7.5 litres, saving about 14,500 litres a year. Install water tank Installing a rainwater tank is a great way to save this precious resource. Look out for the GRAF Carat Underground Rainwater Tank from Reece. Located under the ground, it is designed to save space in the garden and keep the water cool and free from bacteria growth. Filtered tank water can be used inside and outside the home to supply washing machines, toilets, garden taps and irrigation systems.
