FLEXO Magazine : July 2011
find out our target markets. Then we brainstormed product ideas, fingerprinted well in advance and printed away!” Brian Ritter of Appalachian State University, a junior, stated “The main thing the group did to prepare was to set up a good communications network. After that, design and prepress were coordinated, checked and re-checked. I was responsible for logo design and to maintain cohesive design throughout all the printed pieces. Physical printing of the pieces was challenging because of our inability to print on a wide variety of substrates. Therefore, designing for limited substrate choices was a challenge and a necessity. However, it was more of a creative challenge than anything—a good way to stretch our creativity. We held weekly meetings and started a Google group to continue communications through- out working time. We organized printruns, design time and finishing times to have as many heads available as possible. We tried to work together on everything as much as possible.” Jennifer Canipe of Appalachian State recalled, “I spent a large amount of time gathering and testing materials, as well as plating, platemaking and monitoring. Chris Beasley noted, “As head of the production process for the Phoenix Challenge, I spent a lot of time on our Comco Cadet press. I focused on the press issues, such as drying and impression to correct and prepare for our pressruns.” Creating an appro- priate logo, assigning colors and printing it were challenging in this competition, particularly not having capability to print directly onto our substrate. ” From communication and coordination to problem solving and controlling variables on press, the students agreed that the Phoenix Challenge experience was of great importance and benefit in building skills and gaining exposure to future peers and collaborators, as well as a glimpse at pending advancements. n The CompeTiTors Dunwoody College of Technology: Matt Christianson, Matt Dade, Mitch Hanson, Mary Johnson, DJ Ricker.
