Home Living : July 19th 2011
HLC - HOME LIVING: CENTRAL, Tuesday, July 19, 2011 1 HOMELIVING Carpet will keep you warm The right flooring choices can help a great deal to keep winter chills at bay. The chilly weather prompts many of us to be lavish in our use of indoor heaters. But to keep warm, there are many other low-cost options available, says Bunnings flooring buyer Brad Lawrence. Mr Lawrence points out that flooring choices can greatly improve on the insulation of homes, not to mention saving on your energy costs and reducing the use of the heater. These are his top flooring choices for winter: Carpets: Wall-to-wall carpet is the best flooring choice to maximise insulation, save energy and retain warmth in your home. By turning on the heater for a few minutes, the fibres in the carpet will trap hot air and increase thermal insulation in your home, allowing you to then turn off your heater, leaving your carpet to continue heating your home. In addition, carpets are soft and comfortable, which allows you to relax on the floor on cold winter nights. Carpet also reduces interior and exterior noise, giving you a quieter home. Rugs and mats: Stylish and useful all year round, during winter rugs and mats also help insulate the house. Areas of the home fitted with tiles and floorboards, such as bathrooms and living areas, will be colder than carpeted rooms when temperatures outside drop. A rug can be used to warm these areas. Rugs made from nylon or wool are best as they have similar properties to carpet. More tips: www.bunnings.com.au. Brush up on the brightest choice It may be dull and dreary outside but you can bring some brightness to your home with a splash of one of this season's vibrant paint colours. But getting it right is often a difficult task, says Bunnings paint buyer Mick Heanue. ''Neutral colours such as white or beige are great all year round as they're warm during winter and cool in summer,'' Mr Heanue said. ''Yellows help to brighten a room, giving the illusion of extra light. ''A lighter room will lead to less need for lights and a saving in the energy bill. ''Reds and oranges are great for living areas as they're bright, blues are calming for bedrooms and bathrooms. Greens are great for kitchens.'' Things to consider when choosing paint The theme or feel you want to achieve; The direction of the room. North- and west-facing rooms receive a lot of light so they are suited to light and dark colours; however south and east-facing rooms are darker so lighter colours work well; Look through magazines for inspiration; Take advantage of sample cards and look at them against your wall at home; Small trial pots are also a good option; Ensure the new colours match your furniture. 3AMMUT 3TREET 3MITHFIELD WWW GLIDEROL COM &/2 ! &2%% -%!352% 15/4% #!,, o -ANUFACTURERS OF RESIDENTIAL ROLLERS DOORS o 3ECTIONAL OVERHEAD DOORS o !UTOMATIC GARAGE DOOR OPERATORS 2059752i 11/01 BUILT IN WARDROBES FACTORY DIRECT PRICES BUILT IN WARDROBES FACTORY DIRECT PRICES PH: 9890 7477 PH: 9890 7477 • FREE MEASURE & QUOTE • LIFETIME GUARANTEE Made to suit your budget & needs • Style • Service • Variety • Full range • Accessories • Hinged Doors • Sliding Doors • Over 20 years exp.
