Home Living : July 19th 2011
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, July 19, 2011 7 HOMELIVING Theme of things to come Black appliances in the kitchen will again be popular as consumers move towards a high degree of contrast; Accessories such as cushions and vases are a great way to add vibrant colour, pattern and texture to the decor due to their adaptability; Gold and copper accents and accessories work well with base tones, adding an element of bling instead of colour. The connection between kitchen and living space continues to feature in contemporary design and was strongly reflected at the Milan Furniture Fair recently. The show is the biggest event in the design calendar. Now in its 50th year, the fair was more of a celebration than usual with organisers keen to prove that the global furniture industry had bounced back from recession while, above all, reasserting their city as the home of design. The Milan Furniture Fair showed a move towards colours and materials often associated with living room furniture. Major furniture manufacturers displayed their products and continued to build on the colour trends of 2010. Earthy tones, greys and off-whites took on the base tones of the room and main furniture pieces, providing a sense of warmth and security in the living space. Perhaps a sign of the current economic climate, new furniture was generally less flamboyant and more about a sense of longevity with a real focus on fit, feel and finish. The flat-screen television has become the focal point of the living space and many companies are looking for ways to integrate or hide these black monoliths in much the same way kitchen suppliers have been doing with appliances.
