Home Living : July 19th 2011
2 HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, July 19, 2011 Solar panel safety check As the cost of energy rises, many people are considering photovoltaic (PV) systems or solar panels. But before you take this step, NSW Fair Trading advises you to go through this safety check list. Choosing an installer The installation of solar panels must be undertaken by either a licensed builder or licensed electrical contractor (or the holder of an electrical qualified supervisor certificate who is an employee of this contractor). Check the licence details of any builder or electrical contractor by going to the Fair Trading website, or by calling 13 32 20. If you wish to claim any state or federal government rebates, ensure the installer you use is accredited by the Clean Energy Council. A list of accredited installers is available at www.cleanenergycouncil.org.au. Electrical wiring If you use a builder to do the installation part of this work, they will need to subcontract an electrical contractor to undertake the wiring part. Wiring the solar panel Installation must be undertaken by someone holding an electrical contractor's licence or an electrical qualified supervisor certificate. Check the licence details of any electrical contractor or electrical qualified supervisor by going to www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or calling 13 32 20. Before paying any money Ensure your installer gives you a written contract and a copy of the free Fair Trading publication, Consumer Building Guide, which details information you need to be aware of, including: A certificate of home warranty insurance if the total cost of labour and materials is $12,000 or more; The installer must not deduct the amount of any rebate you may be entitled to from the total cost of work. Wipe out the winter blues with a fresh coat of paint to enhance any interior, whether it is keeping the existing palette or adding new colours. Remember to use warmer tones in south-facing areas and more subtle colours where strong winter sun may penetrate living areas. Wonderful, rich reds and tangerines complemented with dark chocolates stimulates the mind and creates a cosy environment. Add rich textured jacquard and velvet accessories. Layer carpet areas with rugs and replace light globes to warm white rather than the cool blue for a more pleasant environment. Seal off doors and windows to stop heat from escaping. Properly fitted window coverings will add ambience and provide insulation. And instead of hibernating until summer, make your home the envy of all with smaller but cosier changes.
