Home Living : July 26th 2011
HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, July 26, 2011 1 HOMELIVING Save energy, water and cash Save energy by drying your clothes on the line rather in a dryer. It's no secret that the rising cost of electricity is a major concern for many Australian families. After one of the coldest autumns on record, the Our Home Our Planet program is encouraging 50,000 Australian households to review their energy and water practices this winter to help reduce wastage and save money. The OHOP program is an initiative of Reckitt Benckiser, a global force in household, health and personal care which manufactures cleaning products such as Vanish, NapiSan, Finish, Harpic, Pine-O-Cleen, Easy Off Bam and Airwick. The program is designed to provide Australians with simple and practical ways to reduce water and energy consumption in their home. There are many ways each household can save on electricity and water bills. In the laundry: Household washing machines are a huge source of wasted water and energy. You can save water by using an effective stain remover, running your washing machine on a short wash cycle and using cold water. Dry your clothes on the line instead of using the dryer. In the kitchen Use a dishwasher instead of hand washing and wait till you have a full load. In the bathroom Avoid flushing your toilet before pouring in liquid cleaner and you can save up to eight litres of water each time you clean it. Shorten the duration of your daily showers. Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth. Around the home Reduce plastic waste by using a multi-purpose cleaner instead of numerous products. Details: www.ourhome- ourplanet.com.au. Register promise Australians are encouraged to practise energy and water-saving tips and register their promise at www.ourhome- ourplanet.com.au. For every promise made, $1 will be donated on their behalf to a cause that directly affects NSW residents, the Murray Darling River Foundation. The Our Home Our Planet $50,000 donation will be used to purchase 25 million litres of water that will be allocated to a Murray Darling River community initiative or one of more than 1000 sites along the river system that most urgently need a boost to their ecologies.
