Home Living : August 2nd 2011
HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, August 2, 2011 5 HOMELIVING Kitchens are becoming the centrepiece of the home. Aiming to make a mark Our love for cooking and entertaining has seen the kitchen become the showpiece of the home and a major selling point. Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Australian Institute of Architects, said the latest trends in kitchen design are all about making a mark. State manager for ACT and NSW, Ian Agnew, said the kitchen has gone from being a back room to the centre of household activity. ''Kitchens are such a showpiece now that many homes have two, one inside and other outside,'' Mr Agnew said. ''The back deck of a home, once the domain of just a portable barbecue, now frequently comes with its own dining setting, wood-fired pizza oven, refrigerator and sink.'' ''Renovating a kitchen can cost between $25,000 to $100,000 and it is important you think through your renovation strategy carefully,'' Mr Agnew said. He said if you were renovating to sell the property, it was often better to not over- capitalise and leave the kitchen unrenovated, allowing the new owner to update to their own style. ''Renovating to improve the home for your family is totally different to renovating to sell,'' he said. Mr Agnew said with the kitchen becoming a hub of activity, there has been a trend in the past decade to ensure the area has plenty of natural light and often includes feature windows where the garden design complements the view from the kitchen. ''A good relationship with the living, dining and outdoor entertaining areas is critical these days and any structural alterations necessary to create an open-plan environment will require appropriate permits to be issued beforehand,'' he said. Details: Archicentre has a free Cost Guide available on its website: www.archicentre.com.au. Keep up with kitchen trends Archicentre state manager ACT & NSW, Ian Agnew says a major recent trend in kitchen renovations has been to use drawers to store crockery, cooking utensils and saucepans, as well as cupboards. He says: Searching behind item after item in cupboards that are too high to see into is no longer an issue now that drawers are becoming a dominant feature in new and renovated kitchens. Open-plan layouts, clean featureless appearances and concealed appliances are also trends in kitchen renovations. Large island benches are also popular as the kitchen is reborn as the home social hub. Island benches create a huddle area in busy times or for a quick snack. Almost one out of four renovators are using a computer in the kitchen. Walk-in pantries remain popular with some even adding a ''butler's pantry''.
