Home Living : August 9th 2011
2 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, August 9, 2011 HOMELIVING Making the roof a hit JANITA SINGH Colour in ... Shale grey roof (top) and deep ocean. The roof is one of the largest fixed elements of a home and deciding its colour can be a challenging process. The profile and pitch of the roof, as well as the location of the house, should be considered. The roof style also affects the general impression of a home. A steep, gabled roof for example will have more aesthetic domin- ance than a skillion roof. BlueScope Steel colour consultant Janne Petrie says it is important to ensure the colour does not work against the building. ''Where the roof is a dominant feature of the home it is important to ensure the colour does not overshadow the entire aesthetic of the building, so it's best to opt for a mid-tone colour,'' she said. The second consideration is the home's surroundings. If it is in a rural area surrounded by bush or green landscape then muted tones are the best choices. For homes in a coastal environment, it's best to capture the seaside ambience. For inner city areas where heritage buildings are the norm, more traditional roof colours are required. Andifthehomeisina modern suburban area a more striking roof colour may be the best option. Once the colour has been chosen, to ensure it works effectively with the rest of the home, repeat the same colour in smaller amounts in up to three locations, such as the mailbox, garden shed or fence. By triangulating the colour, particularly at the front of the property, it will give the house a balanced feel.
