4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, August 16, 2011 HOMELIVING Don't let accidents Enjoying your pool with family and friends is a great way to spend those warm days but safety should always be a priority. From checking your fences and gates to supervising children, we've put together this safety guide with important pointers from the Swimming Pool & Spa Association (SPASA) of NSW. Supervision When it comes to children, constant adult supervision is important. Having an adult present while children play in or around the backyard pool is crucial. Children should never be left alone, even for a short moment. Accidents involving pools can happen very quickly with tragic consequences, SPASA NSW CEO Spiros Dassakis says. Fence your pool The NSW Swimming Pools Act requires all swimming pools to be fenced (minimum 1.2m high) with gates that are self- closing and self-latching. Despite this regulation, drownings still occur where gate locks are broken or when children fit through fence bars. Pool owners are responsible for making sure pools comply with the act. Contact your local council for further information. According to Royal Life Saving chief executive officer Rob Bradley, a fence with a self- closing gate goes hand-in- hand with adult supervision as the best way to prevent childhood drowning. ''Pool fencing should be checked at least once a year to ensure it isn't climbable and is in good repair,'' Mr Bradley said. ''Make sure there are no loose palings and no gaps under or through the fence. It's just like maintaining your car or replacing the pool filter.'' Furniture and other items that children can climb on should never be left near the pool fence. ''Many homeowners also aren't aware that significant weather events, like the summer storms that are common across Australia, may weaken the pool fence,'' Mr Bradley said. ''So after storms you should do a thorough check to make sure nothing has come loose.''
