6 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, August 23, 2011 HOMELIVING Pool owner's guide Solar heating can increase the use of your pool by up to four months of the year. ENJOY the benefits of owning a swimming pool and reduce its energy consumption with a few key tips from the Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) of NSW. Energy-efficient pool heating The sun alone usually won't keep your pool water at that comfortable minimum of around 25C to 28C. For much of the swimming season, the normal temperature is around 18C to 20C, and most of the heat gained during the day is lost overnight, leaving the pool cold again in the morning. By having a heater to warm the water, you can add substantially to the daily use of your pool. Reduce pool heating costs by installing an energy-efficient pool heater. Solar heating This can increase the use of your pool by up to four months of the year. You can add a solar system to your existing filter pump and plumbing. While the type of solar system may vary, the basic principal remains same. Pool water is circulated through a series of tubes (collectors) usually mounted on the roof, where heat is absorbed and the heated water is then returned to the pool. By installing a temperature-sensing controller, it will operate the system only when heat can be gained. Heat pumps These are efficient and use very little electricity to operate. While relatively new to the swimming pool market, the technology has been used in airconditioning and refrigeration.
