FLEXO Magazine : August 2011
MONDAY, OCTOBER 10 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Flexo Quality Consortium (FQC) Working Session (open to the public) The FQC, acting as a select standing committee of Foundation of FTA (FFTA), works to provide the industry with a better understanding of the factors controlling the quality of the flexo print process. Its projects investigate selected process variables in order to further develop reproducible process concepts that allow for measurable advancements in flexo printing technology. On the agenda: review the status of new/existing projects; update action plans; solicit ideas, comments and leaders for new projects; and update membership roles for comments on new or amended standards. If you have wondered why the FQC hasn’t undertaken a project you think is relevant to the future of our industry, this is the perfect opportunity to attend, help shape future activities and lead the industry forward. 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm BASIC COLOR THEORY For those new to the industry or for those interested in obtaining a more basic overview of color, plan to attend this complimentary session in basic color concepts. It will cover: • Color Perception--additive and subtractive colors. • Color Separation for Flexography - color separation; color correction; RGB to CMYK conversion; and dot gain compensation. • Understanding CIELab Color Management - what is color management; and color conversion using CIELab, the CMM, and ICC profiles. Mark Mazur, DuPont Packaging Graphics TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11 8:00 am – 9:30 am BEYOND 4-COLOR (relaxed commercialization) Matching Spot or Custom Colors on Press It’s 2011 and matching spot or custom colors on press continues to be a challenge for flexo printers/converters. Unlike process CMYK colors, matching spot or custom colors continues to be difficult because we have a limited set of tools, and we have little or no known reference density. Join us as we evaluate the current measurement tools available in the pressroom (densitometers & spectrophotometers), as well as review new software specifically designed to match and control spot or custom colors by use of spectral information. Richard Black, All Printing Resources Setting Specifications & Handling Curves for Expanded Gamut Colors & Other Non-CMYK Colors Current standards and specs outlined in Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifications & Tolerances (FIRST), G7TM and GRACoL address CMYK colors; so why not delve into how to apply similar concepts to the Orange, Green and Blue of expanded gamut, as well as other spot colors. You’ll leave with a solid understanding of today’s standards, and the proven methods to get you the results you’re aiming for.
