38 FLEXO august 2011 www.flexography.org COMPLEXITIES & COMBINED PROCESSES • Flexo machine-capabilities can be extended with multiple printing units and it can be done in combi- nation with multiple converting technologies. • The more complex a label’s printing and converting requirements, the longer a UV-flexo label press is going to be. • By making use of the combination of printing and converting on one press line, the final product can be made, in a single pass, in an applicable-ready form. • State-of-the-art processor technology and a friendly machine interface translate to ease of operation in command and control of a complex press line. Numerous Stations, Numerous Flexibilities! Intelligent Components Make for Long, Manageable, Effective Press Lines By Denny Mcgee In converting circles today, combination printing of UV labels is moving from possibility to expectation. Many in the trade now describe it as “a must. ” Fourteen UV-flexo printing stations are delivering diverse applications and at the same time satisfying brand owners’ demands for intricate labels. Such machines are communicating with a variety of colors and expanding the quality and scope of the output of traditional narrow web flexo presses. Long, UV-flexo label printing presses are far from experi- mental. Today, they optimize UV-flexo quality to compete with offset and gravure. They do so by embracing the typical principle of label printing machines. In essence, they apply bright colored artwork to a small amount of substrate and then deliver it wound on reels, ready for reel-fed applicators One leading Russian converter is operating this 14-color uV flexo press. While the converting line is long, it is proving manageable and effective. Bold colors are being held in tight register across a variety of applications. Photo: MPs LLC. TEchnOLOgIEs & TEchnIquEs
