www.flexography.org august 2011 FLEXO 83 Intelligent Machines Are Maintenance Minded advanced Electronics Minimize Manual Labor & Boost Efficiency By tom Jacques “ What are the latest automation technologies found on today ’s modern flexo presses?” “How do these new tech- nologies make the operator ’s job easier?” “What do modern presses offer in terms of maintenance schedules and how do they alert press operators to their requirements?”—the ques- tions are hard-hitting and plentiful. Everyone is searching for secrets to peak performance and peppering press manufacturers with queries directed at maximizing productivity and profitability. A critical concern: “ What caveats are there for operators using these advanced systems for running and maintaining modern flexo presses?” Also, “What flexibility is there in setting up maintenance schedules, so that the alerts can be issued, based on empiri- cal data and experience, versus standard factory settings?” ENERGY & ERGONOMICS Converters are focused on being ever more efficient. As such, they are always looking for better resource utilization, lower waste and less energy usage, all of which translate to lower costs and higher profits. Recent developments, which have contributed to quicker set-ups, include: automated register controls, idle deck makeready systems, pipe-free doctor blade holders and SIMPLE UPKEEP, TARGETED PROMPTS • Converters are looking for better resource utilization, lower waste, and energy efficiency; or in other words, lower costs and higher profits. • Machine interfaces are graphical, intuitive and easy- to-learn. • Tech-savvy workers expect a high degree of automa- tion and ease of operation, which the latest press technology can give them. However, there is also a degree of judgment and common sense that must be applied to any situation. • Maintenance pages on the touch screen alert the operator when action is needed. Flexotecnica’s Xg-10 incorporates advanced electronics in an intelligent, operator-friendly format that at times alerts the user to basic maintenance needs. TEchnoLogiEs & TEchniquEs
