Home Living : September 6th 2011
4 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, September 6, 2011 HOMELIVING Making spring count Now that the weather is warmer, it is a great time to get out in the garden. The work you do in your garden in early spring will have a huge impact on its output later in the year. By getting down to some garden maintenance, you will make it much easier on yourself once summer comes. Prepare your soil: Fertilise soil and mulch your garden beds so the soil is in great shape and ready for planting later on. Make sure your compost pile is in good shape: It is easy to neglect your compost bin, tumbler, or pile over the winter, so get it back in shape. Begin working and turning it and adding to it, so you can be sure that it is ready to use once you need it. Get an early start on weeding: Spring is the perfect time to get rid of those weeds before they develop root systems. It's time to prepare for your summer menu A healthy herb garden. Spring is the time for herb gardens. The tip is to grow them in containers so you can water them easily right through the hottest, driest months. Make sure the containers are big enough to allow the plants to grow and use good quality potting mix. If you are sowing seeds, cover them with 2-3cm of potting mix, firm them down, and make sure you keep them moist during germination. If you are using seedlings, water the plants in their container about 1/2 an hour before planting out into the pot. Make sure the hole you make in the new pot is large enough to accommodate the roots without squashing them.
