HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, September 6, 2011 1 HOMELIVING Make a fresh start with a coat of paint Colour choices will vary depending on the light levels in your home, floor coverings and furniture, as well as your personal preferences. The painting season has arrived. Spring announces the arrival of everything fresh and fabulous as many homeowners start their home projects by colouring their walls. Spring paint colours are all about vibrancy so plan your painting project from start to finish with these easy-to-follow tips from Inspirations Paint & Colour. Choosing Colour The colour of your walls is the foundation of your makeover, so you want it to be perfect. Follow these handy hints to achieve a colour scheme that's right for you and your home. Start by sourcing inspiration from decorator magazines and online photo galleries. Acknowledge both existing and new furnishings and items that you want to incorporate into your home after the makeover. Once you have an idea of the look you want, experiment using colour chips and sample pots at home to see how it looks with your lighting, aspect and decor. When choosing between whites, get a true reading of the underlying tone by holding a grey paint swatch next to it. Inspirations colour consultant Lisa Christie said the way you use colour is personal and will vary depending on the light levels in your home, the placement of doors and windows, the floor coverings, the furniture and personal preferences. ''Your budget can affect your decisions if you're unable to replace flooring or other expensive items, so get your priorities right before you get started,'' she said. If you're still struggling with colour, consider having a qualified colour consultant come to your home. For about $200 they'll work with you to create a look you'll love. Details: www.colourconsult.com.au Now for the right measure Now that you have the perfect colour scheme, its time to get down to the details of the job so you know how much paint you'll need before you get started. 1. Decide how much of the house you'll eventually paint in each colour, even if you're not completing the project all at once because paint gets cheaper per litre when you buy bigger cans. 2. To work out how much paint you'll need, measure the number of square metres to be covered. For the ceiling, measure the room length and multiply by the width. For walls, measure the length around the room (perimeter) and multiply by the height of the walls. Inspirations Paint & Colour store owner John Watkins says, as a general guide, it takes two litres for an average ceiling and four litres for the walls in an average-sized bedroom if applying two coats.
