Home Living : September 13th 2011
HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, September 13, 2011 7 bloom in your garden The Petcare Information and Advisory Service (PIAS) agrees and says great gardens should create perfect pet and plant balance. Susie Willis from PIAS says pet owners are also moving away from the idea that you need a big backyard to care for pets. ''Our research shows that around 60 per cent of pet owners say their pet spent either more or equal amounts of time indoors as outdoors and that only 12 per cent of pet owners in high-density areas said that not having regular access to a secure outdoor space was an issue for them,'' says Ms Willis. ''The growing number of people living in high- density or high-rise accommodation are simply finding innovative ways to create a garden environment that is pet- friendly, even if it is a small balcony.'' HOMELIVING New lifestyle trends are seeing big changes in Australian gardens. Compact beauties are growing trends AUSTRALIAN gardens are going through massive transformations, and it's not just because of climate changes. Some of the biggest changes are occurring due to home and lifestyle trends. According to Elise Willemsen from Pope Products, a garden care and watering brand, while gardens have changed immensely over the past decade due to water restrictions, the changes began well before that. ''Probably the most significant change we see is garden size. And while for many the big yard is a thing of the past, smaller gardens, courtyards and decks can be as alluring, functional and rewarding,'' Ms Willemsen said. The era of the quarter-acre block (1000sq m) is long gone. Declining block sizes are also matched with increasing home sizes, leaving smaller spaces for gardens. ''Smaller spaces and an emphasis on outdoor living have led to some great developments in gardening products,'' Ms Willemsen said. ''Consumers are now looking for neat, compact items which can either be easily stored, or are stylish enough to have on display.''
