Home Living : September 13th 2011
HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, September 13, 2011 1 HOMELIVING Spring into action JANITA SINGH Spring is a busy season for gardeners. New leaves and fresh blooms announce the arrival of spring but before you settle back to enjoy the warmer weather, there are a few things to take care of. Authors of Paper Flow, MaryAnne Bennie and Brigitte Hinneberg, suggest setting a time limit to complete any unwanted tasks around the house and garden. Armed with a stopwatch and the right cleaning equipment, Bennie and Hinneberg say every room in the home can be tackled in no time at all, ready for any spring event. Once done inside, look outside and see how you can improve your outdoor living areas. Spring is probably the busiest and happiest season for the garden. Plants are waking up, flowers are ready to bloom and everything comes alive. Clean up your garden, remove dead growth and plant seasonal flowers and vegetables. Think of ways to add more colour -- paint a feature garden wall or bring in colourful decorative pots. Attract birds with a bird feeder or a water bath. A water feature also adds more life to your surroundings. After all, spring brings more sun, smiles and happy times and you need to be ready to embrace it. Growing trends in compact beauties New lifestyle trends are seeing big changes in Australian gardens. AUSTRALIAN gardens are going through massive transformations, and it's not just because of climate changes. Some of the biggest changes are occurring due to home and lifestyle trends. According to Elise Willemsen from Pope Products, a garden care and watering brand, while gardens have changed immensely over the past decade due to water restrictions, the changes began well before that. ''Probably the most significant change we see is garden size. And while for many the big yard is a thing of the past, smaller gardens, courtyards and decks can be as alluring, functional and rewarding,'' Ms Willemsen said. The era of the quarter-acre block (1000sq m) is long gone. Declining block sizes are also matched with increasing home sizes, leaving smaller spaces for gardens. ''Smaller spaces and an emphasis on outdoor living have led to some great developments in gardening products,'' Ms Willemsen said.
