FLEXO Magazine : September 2011
Justin Moss, production manager said, “It was a hard 14 months. It wasn’t easy, but at the end of the day it was well worth it. Everybody ’s on the same page with the same common goal. We know what we’re going for. ” “Going through each of the levels— FIRST Press Operator, Prepress Opera- tor and Implementation Specialist train- ing all progress from Level 1 through Level 3—going through the testing, it wasn’t too fast of a process to learn,” said Gilkey. “ We were able to digest it. We were able to talk amongst ourselves and work together as a team to get this whole project done. “ He further maintained, “As a compa- ny, speaking from a sales perspective, FIRST Certification gives us something to really sell. It increases our credibility in the marketplace. All that the custom- ers had to go on in the past, was experi- ences they ’ve had with us or other peo- ple they know in the field. Now, we’ve got something that’s ‘rubber-stamped.’ To be FIRST certified, it gives us a huge amount of credibility right off the bat. It’s something to sell. The print industry is really looking for something that will set us apart from our competitors, and I think we really have that now.” Competitive advantages are the underlying results of the FIRST 4.0 program. Turning newfound knowledge and sharpened skills into consistently produced quality printed packages quickly leads to stronger business num- bers and a better bottom line. PROCESS CONTROL Quality Control Manager Dave Dun- can was thrilled with the program as well. “ The new practices and proce- dures have made switching from job to job more seamless than previously thought possible. We’re trying to main- tain our workflow as we go along. One of the main things FIRST does is that it gives legitimacy to our consistency. “It gives a form to it, too,” Duncan continued. “FI RST training really tells you how to do it. We’re seeing a lot of acceptance in the pressroom. Quality is a lot better too. Things are going much smoother. We don’t need to change our setup for each new label that comes along. Our setup is there, we move to the next job and we’re ready to go. We still have some refinement to do, but we’re moving along.” Dan Crammer sees the added effect on the company ’s workflow as much as anyone. As the company ’s sched- uler, he feels the impact of increased efficiency more than most. “ It really is a beautiful thing. Workflow tags and things like that promote smooth sched- uling. Thanks to the proper utilization of the tags and other job tracking documentation, the pressline remains orderly as we run process work. “Instead of going from one job to the next and changing our value and changing our cylinders, and anilox rolls, our processes setup is already set up,” he observed. “ We’re optimized and characterized. We don’t have to mess with inks or change anything else. That’s a huge time-saver. All this efficiency helps in the long run.” n www.flexography.org september 2011 FLEXO 17 Improve your balance at any speed theDiffe rence!
