FLEXO Magazine : September 2011
job in under five minutes, while also changing ink pans. Fair- ley says the press has drawn significant interest from convert- ers looking to enter the flexible packaging market. Holland’s MPS has displayed its EXL-packaging presses, complete with Crisp Dot technology, as well as the new EF and EC models for short web paths and print sleeves best used for label and film conversion. Narrow web digital press manufacturer Xeikon has just added a 20-in. wide model, the 3500, to go along with its exist- ing 13-in. model 330. Both machines are LED -array-based presses, capable of printing at 1,200 dpi image resolution on a broad array of substrates, including PVC, PET and BOPP. Xei- kon’s 3500 offers a web width up to 516 mm and allows users to digitally print cartons beyond 4,000 linear meters. As part of the Package Printing Zone at Labelexpo, Xeikon will give demon- strations of carton, tube and pail decoration, while Xerox and Agfa Dotrix are also taking on the short-run carton market. Not to be outdone, EFI Jetrion unveiled its 4830 LED UV ink- jet system, as well as a newly developed flexible ink set that allows printing on unsupported and heat-sensitive materials, such as shrink sleeves. This model has allowed for label con- verters to move into the flexible packaging market. They will also be offering a single-pass digital white targeted at printing on clear film and metallic substrates, according to Fairley. “Similar innovative developments have been taking place in narrow web carton production technology. Carton manu- facturers looking to produce fast turnaround, high quality and streamlined multi-SKU production on-demand and in short runs have the option to print digitally using the latest HP Indigo WS6000 press technology. Complemented with an AB Graphic Digicon carton converting system, it enables carton producers to manage their brand customers better. At the same time, brand owners using digital label printing for their packaging work gain the ability to affordably launch new products and gain better visibility on the shelves.” Omet and Gallus represent two traditional flexo narrow web press manufacturers with carton capabilities and will both be presenting during the Package Printing Zone seminar sessions, Fairley said. “Put together, narrow and mid web presses, both conven- tional and digital, now offer carton and flexible packaging converters the opportunity to target new short-run package printing applications, drive differentiation and personaliza- tion, offer quicker delivery and reduced stockholding—and become more profitable. The Package Printing Zone at Labelexpo-Europe this year will undoubtedly provide carton and flexible packaging printers with an ideal opportunity to see and hear the latest innovations in narrow web convention- al and digital presses for printing on unsupported films and a wide range of board or tube laminate materials.” The driving forces behind the move to narrow web conven- tional and digital package printing seems set to continue—even grow—with those bold enough to make the investment in new presses, solutions and applications reaping the benefits. n Six halls, 500+ exhibitors and four days—Labelexpo-Europe is all about a live experience—the noise of the machinery, the feel of the substrates and the bright, vivid colors of the label.
