FLEXO Magazine : September 2011
• We have installed an EyeC ProofilerTM, an off-line auto- mated print inspection system performing sample tests for content verification and quality control. Put simply, this means that the very same PDF that our customer approves is electronically compared to a scanned final print sample. With barcode verification as part of the process, it has proved an invaluable addition to our quality control de- partment. This is of particular benefit when printing foreign languages. The system can pick up missing serifs and accents that operators may miss due to language skills. FACILITIES FOOTPRINT Our dedicated in-mold labeling plant was opened in October 2008 in Runcorn, North West England. Identifying the opportunity and gap in the market for an IML manufacturer, we recruited a production team specifically for the task. High quality pre-cut labels supplied individually stacked or on a reel are a cost-effective way of decorating contain- ers and lids with high quality and vibrant graphics. The application process involves injection molding the label into the product’s packaging. This development enhanced our product offering and has opened up new markets in the U.K . and Europe. As technology continues to advance in the label industry, we are committed to leading the market through in- vesting in innovative equipment and highly skilled personnel. Since opening this plant we have added wrap-around and cut-and-stack label production to the site. These filmic labels are utilized particularly in the soft drinks and beverage mar- kets, given the exposure to wet conditions and refrigeration. Both opaque and clear non-adhesive OPP films are typically utilized--in both matt or gloss finishes. Sunny D is a recent ad- dition to our impressive portfolio. Our Essex plant came online in 2009 adding another dimension to Systems Labelling by offering an express label service for short to medium volumes of printed and plain self- adhesive labels. The aim is to react extremely quickly while maintaining our reputation for premium quality printed and plain self-adhesive labels. With over 1,300 cutters in all shapes and sizes, we offer customers our nearest stock cutter to reduce origination costs whenever possible. Systems Labelling Express has a person- ality and place in the market of its own; with the reassurance and flexibility that belonging to a large company provides. SUSTAINABILITY MINDED Much is written on the subject of “the green issue” and how the packaging industry is contributing to the war on climate change. Systems Labelling sees this as just another aspect of day-to-day operations and has done so for many years. The working environment has seen continuous investment in state-of-the-art solvent free platemaking equipment, dust and humidity controls and best practice training programs for staff. Over 170 tons of waste materials a year including pal- lets, ink, film, chemicals and adhesive are recycled. Business stationery is printed on recycled paper and reels are deliv- ered in recycled boxes. Indeed our attention to sustainability and knowledge of the material options available have been recognized by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) the U.K .Govern- ment-funded organization. Our knowledge has been utilized to the benefit of the liquid dairy industry in the U.K . as part of a project to improve the recyclability of plastic milk bottles. In short, we identified some “quick wins” that will enable the production of milk bottles with at least 30 percent rHDPE to be acceptable from a color perspective. This has the poten- tial to increase to 50 percent rHDPE. What’s next? Our strategy is to develop our one-stop solu- tion further by adding more product types and reaching wider markets in Europe and internationally. Indeed we are seeking potential partners for distribution overseas and would wel- come contact from agents, packaging distributors or printers who wish to add label products to their portfolio. n About the author: Stephen Lloyd is director of marketing and business development for Systems Labelling, Ltd.
