Plants & Processes Calculating Your Facility’s Carbon Footprint scope 2: Indirect emissions from Purchased electricity Indirect greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, or Scope 2 emissions, result from the generation of purchased elec- tricity that is consumed in owned or controlled equipment or operations. Three types of GHGs are released when fossil fuels--carbon dioxide (CO2), and to a lesser extent, methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O)--are combusted to generate electricity. For any flexo plant, purchased electricity will rep- resent one of the largest sources of GHG emissions and the most significant opportunity to reduce them. More than 84 percent of the energy consumed in the United States (on a BTU basis) is produced through the combustion of coal, natural gas and oil, all of which generate GHGs. The ELECTRICITY & EMMISSIONS • Reducing Scope 2 emissions has potential to impact total CO2. • CH4 and N20 account for small portions of emissions from electricity generation. • Coal combustion, not oil or natural gas, results in greatest amount of CO2 emissions per unit of electric- ity generated. • Most accurate information for calculation of total carbon emissions can be found on monthly bills or by contacting the local utility. GWP is based on carbon dioxide (co2) and requires you to calculate the co2e for methane (cH4) and nitrous oxide (n2o).
