8 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, October 4, 2011 HOMELIVING Make statement with latest trend in rust effects A rust-effect garden wall. An outstanding rust-effect feature wall. DIY SPRING PROJECT How to create a rust-effect feature wall -- perfect for inside or outside as a highlight garden wall Bring out the warmth of the season with something rustic. Make a statement with the latest trend that provides a gorgeous and original rust effect -- perfect for feature walls inside and outside. The rust effect complements neutral shades of cream, white, nudes, beiges and mushroom tones and picks out the darker timbres of wooden flooring, panelling and furniture. Here's an easy guide to achieve the ultimate wow factor. Things you need: Rust base paint; rust solution; drop sheet; Paint stirrer; variety of wide (100ml) synthetic brushes and a roller; clean containers and a roller tray; Scotch Blue Painters tape; spray bottle filled with water; overalls, safety goggles and impervious gloves (for applying rust solution); water-based clear coat; spare piece of board for practising application technique. Step 1: Shake well and pour rust base paint into a clean, dry container. Mask off anything that could get painted over on your chosen feature wall and begin cutting in. Apply two coats with a wide brush and a random brush- stroke action. Allow a minimum of 12 hours dry time between coats. Step 2: It is important to wear overalls, impervious gloves, and chemical safety gloves. Make sure the area is well ventilated. Once rust base paint is completely dry, apply two coats of rust solution with a wide brush and random brush-strokes. Allow a minimum of eight hours dry time between coats. Start brushing both coats of rust solution in the middle of your wall and work out towards the edges. Make sure to brush right up to the tape in your masked off area. Do not cut in or you will end up with a picture frame effect. Don't be afraid to load up your brush and be generous with your application. Do not overspread the solution. For a better effect, go back over areas you have already painted while the paint is still wet. Try moderating your pressure on the brush as you go for a more random finish. Step 3: Clear coat (optional) Finish with a suitable water- based clear coat. Details: www.dulux.com.au HANDY TIPS: Practise your application technique on a spare piece of board. Work in an area of about one square metre at a time, making sure to cover the entire surface before moving on. Make sure only one person does the painting for consistent effect. Paint entire wall in one sitting. Resist the temptation to touch up as you go, as this will ruin the effect SERVICES TO ALL DOORS New Showroom: Unit 57/4 Hoyle Ave, CASTLE HILL ( OVER 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE ( DEAN 2042424 2/8 AUTOMATIC OPENERS FR.$450 FREE MEASURE & QUOTE 9894 1233 GARAGE DOOR SALES & REPAIRS PTY LTD Revitalise Your Tiles & Hard Surfaces! The great thing about tiles is that they outlast many other floor coverings. Unfortunately, over time, dirt can become ingrained in the tiles and grout joints, which can be very hard to remove by home owners. At Tile Cleaning Solutions, we have a way of cleaning that "hard to remove" dirt from tiles. The process we use utilises hot water at high pressure to remove all the in-ground dirt and oils from the tiles and grout joints. A powerful vacuum simultaneously removes the water and dirt from the floor, leaving it totally clean, just like the first day the tiles were installed. It sounds messy...it isn't. Because all the cleaning is completed in a dome that is attached to the floor, there is no mess or overspray. We can clean and/or seal all internal and external tiles, pavers, stone surfaces, stencilcrete, stencilled & concrete driveways. MINOR REPAIRS ALSO DONE BY A QUALIFIED TILER.
