of the client. All of the information that is culled must be disseminated to the pressroom floor. Press technicians/operators need to understand what the numbers mean and how to use them day-to-day. After all, it doesn’t do management personnel any good if they are the only ones who under- stand the data. It has to be endorsed by everyone from the top to the bottom. A continuous improvement philoso- phy is the critical final step. Establishing certification of incoming materials, such as coming to press with inks that are certified is also important. Understand the level of quality your substrate and pre- press tools contain is important as well. Prepress work needs to be done upfront with fingerprinting and char- acterization, so that you establish an optimized operating zone. Then it’s a matter of taking this data and using it to one’s advantage. If you aren’t taking all these measurements today, there is an adjustment period involved. The good news is more and more tools are com- ing out on the market that are helping with this sort of thing, such as scanning spectrophotometers and other devices that reduce the amount of time it takes to ingest colorimetric data. What many reading this need to understand is that statistical process control and continuous improvement is an ongoing process. Timely review meetings to cover scorecard data helps to improve performance based on the key performance measures. In addition, create a certificate of analysis and reference it to all products going out the door. The certificate will measure the key perform areas estab- lished between a value chain supply base and ensure that items with print defects, or other manufacturing flaws that detract from the brand’s message, are kept to a minimum. n About the Author: Robb Frimming is the print service director for Schawk Inc. and leads a team of print service specialists in Cincinnati, OH.
