Technologies & Techniques Color Communication optimizing & Maintaining iCC Compliant Workflows is no Daunting Task By Roy Bohnen Nearly 20 years ago, eight manufacturers—Adobe, Agfa, Apple, Kodak, Microsoft, Silicon Graphics, Sun Microsystems, and Taligent—set out to develop a standardized, open, vendor neutral, cross-platform color management system. The year was 1993 and the Internation- al Color Consortium was born. Today, there are more than 50 contributing members embracing the common architecture and its components. Promotion and adoption of ICC profiles is widespread. Most graphics applications and Raster Image Processors (RIP’s) have the ability to utilize them, yet despite these ad- vances, there is still a great deal of confusion surrounding the key concepts. With the introduction of the ICC specification, developers and programmers worked very hard to build products that were easy to use and full featured. Therein lies one of the biggest issues with the adoption of an ICC compliant workflow. There are many variables that need to be understood during the process of setting up the devices in your workflow. After setup, the process must be verified to ensure consistency and repeatability. What we continue to see is that the process of creating ICC Profiles is actually very easy. It is the concept of optimiz- PROFILING FOR OUTPUT DEVICES • RIP allows access to inks, in order to optimize the capabilities of the ink and media combination. • Linearization controls create a smooth tone curve or dynamic range. • Ink limit is defined to ensure that the shadow region creates a dark overprint without bleeding or puddling. • A flexographic printing press has far more variation and controls than an inkjet printer, but the premise follows similar lines. - Ink restriction per channel is controlled by the anilox roller and volume of the cell, along with the viscosity of the ink. - Linearization is controlled by plate curves at the RIP. - Ink limit of the digital file has to be controlled in design or prepress. • Calibration needs to be performed. The calibration optimizes the device in order to achieve the desired results.
