HLW-HOMELIVING:WEST,Tuesday,October18,20111 ADVERTISING FEATURE HOW TO EARN YOUR STRIPES STRIP SHOW ADDS CHARACTER DESIGN TIPS ❏ Horizontal stripes make a room appear more spacious ❏ Vertical stripes make a room’s ceiling appear higher ❏ Combine different design products for maximum impact ❏ Things to get: Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape for delicate surfaces, spirit level STRIPE it rich – add sophistication, character, perspective and definition to a room by painting stripes. Here, Dulux Design paint range experts share a few tips on how to earn your stripes and enjoy your new- look room. Prepare the surface Clean the walls with sugar soap and rinse with water. Then scrape and sand any loose plaster or flaking paint. Fill any cracks or holes with suitable filler and sand and dust the area. Mask up the edges and corners of your feature area with Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape. Apply your base coat of paint, usually the lightest of your stripe colours. Determine width of the stripes To determine the width of stripes, try attaching strips of coloured paper to where you think the stripe should be. Try different thicknesses. Measuring Once you have decided on the desired stripe width, determine placement. Begin measuring by starting at the centre of the wall and working your way outward. Mark lines Now that you know where the stripes will be, mark them with a pencil. Use a spirit level to ensure they are straight and draw lines. Painters tape the stripes Apply your Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape just outside each penciled line so the painted stripe will cover the pencil line. Press down firmly on the edge of the Painter’s Tape to guard against paint bleeding. Paint the stripes Fill in each stripe with your chosen paint. Using a trim brush, paint over part of the Painter’s Tape and stripe area to ensure a sharp edge. Use a roller or brush to fill in the rest of the stripe. Remove painter’s tape Once the second coat of the paint is touch dry, carefully peel away the Painter’s Tape at a 45-degree angle. If any bleeding has occurred, touch up with a small artists brush. Now settle back and enjoy your room.
