FLEXO Magazine : November 2011
Positive Outlook We’re seeing a lot of numbers this month. Forecasts are rolling in. Business projections point up and up. Conference attendance is shattering past records this fall. Technological advancements are being lauded. Data col- lected relative to their impact on productivity in the pressroom is coming to light. We report on all of that and more in this issue. Here is just a sample of what is be- ing said about our industry and the momentum it’s showing in recent days: • Cartons will see 4.4 percent annual growth in shipment volumes for five years. • Flexible packaging sales projections forecast a $15 billion jump. • Label shipments are growing just under 5 percent annually. • At present, 12 percent of the 3,000 flexographic presses installed in North America, are equipped with intelligent operator interfaces. They save hundreds of hours in setup time, hundreds of hours in labor and assist in eliminating significant volumes of material waste on each and every machine. Great news doesn’t stop there. In fact, it continues to pour in. Buzz on the street is that 2012 will see these trends continue. Next year: • drupa will mark its 60th anniversary. Countless product introductions are planned. • Labelexpo is coming off its most successful European show and is looking to mirror that experience, here in America, next September • INFO*FLEX will proudly salute its 30+ year history. FTA is once again forecast- ing a sold-out show (it’s currently 80 percent booked). • FFTA’s Forum theme is set: “Flexo: Brand of Choice.” The motto speaks to what has become a robust reputation for quality, consistency, repeatability and an accompanying nod to cost effectiveness. SENSATION & SHOWCASE Forum and INFO*FLEX will once again combine to be our one true industry showcase. Cutting-edge sessions are promised. Side-by-side print comparisons are planned. Networking opportunities are being described as, “unparalleled in the marketplace.” Attendees are being told to expect practical solutions—many that bring near instant pay back. The Forum agenda is packed with “can’t-miss briefings” on: emerging trends and new technologies, expanded color gamut printing, operational excellence, Flexo- graphic Image Reproduction Specifications and Tolerances (FIRST), high-speed printing and, of course, Flexo Quality Consortium (FQC) experiments and research findings. Encore performances are set for the INFO*FLEX Presentation Theater, the Edu- cational Pavilion and the Excellence in Flexography Awards gala that highlights the Annual Banquet and segues into the INFO*FLEX Awards gallery. FLEXO, for its part, is already hard at work in starting assembly of next February ’s Official INFO*FLEX Exhibit Guide and making preparations for rapid turnaround on the March Excellence in Flexography Awards Recap. And, as you’ll see from this edition—boasting dual covers in flip format—Fo- rum and INFO*FLEX take marquis billing, as FTA presents the first-available full brochure. It lists out all the intricate details on the program and proceedings that simply must be added to every flexographer’s calendar.
